Thoughts and observations and suggestions: first song and First Dance

  • A good wedding songneeds to have a clear, steady beat that you can hear. Its the song you select which tells you the style of dance you'll do. Musical Standards like Sinatra, etc. are often Foxtrots, a travelling dance that moves naturally around the dance floor. Other dance styles Waltz, Tango, Swing or Salsa, are also options.

  • You may discover you've picked your favorite dance before you decide on your first dance song. Finding a song to for that dance style will be easy. Ask for help if you need it.

  • Try to keep the song length to 2 to 3 minutes.

  • Once you learn a little, practice the dance steps you've learned and, most importantly, get comfortable with the dance's rhythm pattern. Play around with other songs and tempos so you can dance to different songs comfortably.

  • Practice is always important, working on leading and following. Make it as easy as you can to look and feel good when you do dance. Like anything else, the more you do it, the easier it is. Practice between lessons; it really makes a difference.

  • If possible, find out the dimensions of your dance floor and tell your instructor.

  • Do you know when, during the reception, you will do your first dance?

  • Be sure your Band or DJ will play the song at the tempo (speed) you practiced. Also, be sure to tell your photographer and or Video operator when you plan to do your First Dance and describe any special moments or dance moves you'd rerally like them to capture: a dipping turn, a twirl, or the spectacular ending!

  • But whatever happens during your first dance... if you forget a step or miss a beat or two of the rhythm, just continue dancing. Relax, recover, and enjoy this incredible moment together.

  • Because, most importantly, dancing is about having fun.
